Perkembangan dunia gamabr digital dalam
berbagai bentuk menunjukkan semakin tingginya kesadaran masyarakat akan image
atau citra terhadap sesuatu objek atau benda.Perkembangan ini tak lepas dari semakin kencangnya laju perkembangan hardware pencipta image maupun pengelola hingga pencetakaan yang sangat bervariasi.
Pengolahan gambar dasar sebuah obyek sampai pada menghasilkan pencitraan yang indah akan sesuatu tak lepas dari cita rasa seni seorang desainer grafis. Seorang desainer yang mampu menghasilkan desain indah bercita rasa seni tinggi dan mampu menampilkan pencitraan bagus atas sebuah obyek/produk.
Seorang desainer mampu memperkirakan sebuah obyek dasar akan dipoles untuk menghasilkan karakter tertentu dengan kombinasi tertentu pula. Kemampuan seorang desainer grafis dalam era digital jelas tak bisa dilepaskan dari derkembangan perangkat lunak dan perangkat keras di bidang pengolahan digital image, mulai dari perangkat input, proses hingga outputnya.
Di sisi perangkat lunak, pengolah grafis termasuk kategori yang memiliki penggemar yang sangat banyak mengingat tingkat aplikatifnya yang relatif tinggi dibandingkan dengan misal, pemrograman atau jaringan. Software pengolah gambar secara umum terbagi dalam dua bagian besar meskipun tidak mutlak, yaitu pengolah vektor dan bitmap.
1. Vektor adalah serangkaian instruksi matematis yang dijabarkan dalam bentuk, garis, dan bagian-bagain lain yang saling berhubungan dalam sebuah gambar. Ukuran file relatif kecil dan jika diubah ukurannya (seperti gambar dibawah ini) kualitasnya tetap. Contoh file vektor adalah .wmf, swf , cdr dan .ai. Dan sering dipakai dalam membuat logo, animasi, ilustrasi, kartun, clipart dsb.
2. Bitmap adalah gambar bertipe raster. Mengandalkan jumlah pixel dalam satu satuan tertentu. Semakin rapat pixel maka semakin baik kualitas gambar. Sebaliknya jika dipaksa diperbesar akan terlihat pecah . Besar file yang dihasilkan cenderung besar.
Contoh bitmap adalah .bmp, .jpg, .gif.
Suatu foto atau gambar bisa direpresentasikan dengan format bitmap dalam ribuan titik warna-warni yang membentuk suatu pola. Pada file bitmap dikenal dua istilah penting, yaitu :
1. Resolusi atau jumlah titik persatuan luas, yang akan mempengaruhi ketajaman dan detil file bitmap. Biasanya dinyatakan dalam satuan dpi (dot per inch).
2. Intensitas atau kedalaman warna, yang akan menentukan kualitas warna gambar secara keseluruhan. Biasanya dikenal istilah 256 warna, high color, true color, gradasi abu-abu (grayscale), serta hitam-putih (black & white).
